Why Study Abroad
There are many reasons to study abroad, all fitting into three essential categories: academic, experienced, and personal.
Academic Reasons:
Research shows that alums studying abroad have higher GPAs and graduation rates than their peers without international experience. These trends are consistent across various demographics, including gender, socioeconomic status, and race. In summary, students who study abroad achieve academically more than those who do not. This increased success may be linked to the cognitive growth of students traveling internationally.
Professional Reasons:
Study abroad alums succeed at higher rates in college and develop valuable transferable skills such as communication, tolerance, adaptability, and problem-solving. Furthermore, gaining international experience is essential in today’s global economy.
Personal Reasons:
Students who study abroad report significant self-confidence, maturity, and independence gains. Their international experiences help them develop a more sophisticated worldview and foster an appreciation for different cultures. Additionally, they often find that their friendships become more diverse. Many students are pleasantly surprised to discover a deeper appreciation for their culture. This revelation usually leaves them intrigued and more open-minded. Traveling abroad also presents challenges; many participants find that they learn as much about themselves as they do about their coursework.
Studying abroad is more than just a fun adventure; it transforms you in ways that enhance your academic, professional, and personal skills, making you more ambitious and career-oriented.
