Students performing science lab

The Welding Technology program offers training to prepare students to become skilled welders. The total program, including preparation and testing for the American Welding Society (AWS) qualification, requires a minimum of 1,050 hours of training. Graduates will be taught techniques that include Oxyfuel Cutting, Plasma Arc Cutting (PAC), and Carbon Arc Gouging (GAC).  Welding processes will consist of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), on the plate, as well as blueprint reading and welding symbol interpretation. The program prepares students to meet industry standards in structural welding. Seating is limited. Students are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

STARTING SALARIES

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, starting salaries for a 40-hour workweek range from $28,560 to $51,430. This figure does not include daily allowances or overtime pay. However, if an individual starts in a union, apprentice salaries can be between $50,000 and $60,000, comprising a benefits package.

AWS qualification testing is available for both the Welding Technologies and Advanced Welding Technologies courses.

The cost for each AWS test is $400.00, and FGC will refund the cost of each test that is passed.

Welding Technologies Testing Options:

  • SMAW (stick) limited thickness testing on 3/8" plate in the 3G (vertical) and 4G (overhead) positions.
  • FCAW-G (gas-shielded) unlimited thickness testing on a one-inch plate in the 3G (vertical) and 4G (overhead) positions.

Advanced Welding Technologies Testing Options:

  • SMAW (stick) testing on schedule 40 or 80 pipes in the 6G inclined multiple positions.
  • GTAW (TIG) and SMAW (stick) testing on schedule 40 or 80 pipes in the 6G inclined multiple positions.
