Florida Gateway College has selected Jimmy Williams to be the head coach of the college’s reinstated Women’s Softball Team.

Williams has nine years of experience coaching varsity softball at Columbia High School and six years coaching junior varsity softball. He also coached two years of baseball at CHS. During his time with varsity softball, the team won 191 games, were 6A state champions, Kissimmee Klassic Champions, and four-time regional finalists. In 2013, he was named Florida Athletic Coaches Association 6A Coach of the Year. Williams also has eight years of experience coaching travel softball with four trips to the United Fastpitch Softball Tournament World Series.

“The return of women’s fastpitch softball at FGC is monumental for all the surrounding counties,” said Williams. “I am honored to have the opportunity to take the program to the championship level.”

Williams is a graduate of FGC (then Lake City Community College), earning an Associate of Arts degree. He went on to attend St. Leo University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. In addition to coaching, he also taught Building Construction with the Columbia County School District for 28 years and worked with his students on numerous Habitat for Humanity construction projects in the community.

After an exhaustive national search was conducted, Williams emerged as the best candidate to reinvigorate the FGC’s softball program after a 15-year hiatus, not only for his extensive experience and qualifications, but also for his local roots. This will be vital in recruiting the most talented local players and continuing FGC Athletics’ dedication to programs focused on excellent student-athletes from the surrounding region.

“We are excited to have Coach Jimmy Williams joining our coaching staff at FGC,” said Rebecca Golden, Athletic Director. “The knowledge and experience he brings will be essential as we revive the softball program, and his deep connections to the community will be a huge asset in recruiting. We can’t wait to get started.”

Coach Williams will start in the position November 1, 2022, and begin recruitment and preparation for competition beginning in the 2023-2024 season. Women’s Softball joins a diverse and growing lineup of intercollegiate sports at FGC: Men’s Basketball, Women’s Cross Country, coed Esports, and the new Women’s Flag Football Team.
