LAKE CITY, Fla. – Florida Gateway College is pleased to announce that Mr. Robert “Chuck” Brannan III has been selected as the Spring 2022 FGC Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. Brannan will be honored at the Spring Commencement Ceremonies in the Howard Center on May 6, 2022.

Mr. Brannan is a proud graduate of Florida Gateway College (then Lake City Community College) where he earned an Associate of Arts degree and attained the honor of magna cum laude. He was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and was named to the President’s and Dean’s Lists. He would later complete his Florida Police Standards at the Lake City Community College Police Academy, where he completed 360 hours of training and education and graduated first in his class.

Brannan went on to study at the University of Florida where he served in multiple student leadership roles, was awarded the President’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to the University, and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice.

Upon graduation from UF, Brannan began his law enforcement career serving with the U.S. Marshals Service before joining the Baker County Sheriff’s Office. There, he ascended through the ranks, becoming Chief Investigator with the rank of Major, a position he held for 16 years. After his retirement from nearly 30 years in law enforcement, he continues to serve as a Baker County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Deputy Sheriff.

Brannan currently serves in the Florida Legislature’s House of Representatives representing District 10, which includes Baker, Columbia, Suwannee, Hamilton, and a portion of Alachua County, an office to which he was elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2020. He currently sits on the Judiciary and Public Integrity & Elections Committees, along with multiple subcommittees, and is Chair of the Criminal Justice & Public Safety Subcommittee. Since 2002, he has served on the Florida Gateway College Board of Trustees where he represents Baker County and continues to give back to the college and secure its future for generations of students to come.

Brannan has two children, Chase and Rafe. He resides in Macclenny, FL, with his wife, Lorelie, who serves as an Assistant State Attorney with the State Attorney’s Office.
