The Florida Gateway College Timberwolves are headed to the NJCAA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championships. On Saturday, March 5, the Wolves defeated Fayetteville Tech 80-77 to earn a spot in the Sweet 16 of this year’s tournament which runs March 15-19 in Danville, Illinois.

FGC President Dr. Lawrence Barrett attended the game in North Carolina and took pride in what he saw on and off the court: “Our team fought hard and represented the college well, both in their play on the floor and outside the gym,” said Barrett. “Our team and coaches exemplified our caring and commitment to success.”

This marks the team’s first trip to national competition since the return of men’s basketball four years ago, the first time FGC has made the national tournament in 46 years, and the first time any team from Florida has made the Division II National Championship Tournament.

Head Coach Charles Ruise is confident his players are ready for their first outing on the national stage.

“These young men have come together and focused on the things that are important – on team, on hustle, on playing hard – and that’s put us in a position to compete on the national level,” said Ruise.

“Coach Ruise and the Timberwolves played a great game in Fayetteville,” said FGC Athletic Director Rebecca Golden. “They came out strong and controlled the pace of the game. We are very proud of these young men and their hard work and excited to watch them shine in Danville, Illinois.”

The Timberwolves’ first test of the tournament will be Tuesday, March 15, when they face South Suburban College out of South Holland, Illinois, at 2 p.m. EDT. The game will be broadcast live on the NJCAA Network at www.njcaa.org/network.
