On Tuesday, Feb. 1, Florida Gateway College students, faculty, and staff gathered at the campus’s flag pole to officially recognize the start of Black History Month.

The ceremony highlighted the contributions of African Americans to art, music, literature, science, civil rights, and politics and the integral role of Black history in the understanding of American history as a whole.

“These people have helped us learn what strength is, what perseverance is,” said FGC President Dr. Lawrence Barrett in his remarks. “They broke down barriers, they stood against injustice, they helped us pull together as a nation and overcome our darkest days. These people and so many others helped us build toward a greater nation where people are judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin.”

Lake City Council Member Eugene Jefferson addressed the crowd and read the official Proclamation designating February 2022 as the “Month to Celebrate American History and the Era of African Heritage in the City of Lake City.”

FGC will continue to celebrate Black History Month throughout February. Activities scheduled include:

  • February 3 – Black History Trivia in the FGC Student Center.
  • February 4 – 5:30 p.m.  Movie Night at Richardson Community Center featuring Disney Pixar’s “Soul.”
  • February 7-28 – Black History Walk of Fame with informational signs on campus featuring famous and influential African American figures.
  • February 18 – Student Field Trip to Fort Mose Historic State Park in St. Augustine, FL, the first free Black settlement in colonial America.
  • February 23 – 11:15 a.m.  Black History Month Program in the Levy Performing Arts Center featuring musical performances and guest speakers. Event is free and open to the public.
